Some Books I Return To

There were some comments made about my account of the reading, or should I say listening, experience of Richard Rohr OFM’s recent book titled The Wisdom Pattern. My response can be found here.
Some other books I have found myself returning to are:

The Glenstal Book of Prayer.  From the Irish Benedictine Abbey of the same name.

Anthony de Mello, SJ Awareness. My original reason for reading this is a story in itself. It is real de Mello. Always challenging, yet encouraging. Delving into the depths of our Catholic spiritual and theological tradition while illustrating it with stories and sayings from other traditions.

Joan Chittester, OSB and Rowan Williams Uncommon Gratitude and also here. This gem of short reflective essays is an evergreen. Written in response to events around the September 11 2001 attacks, it is full of challenge, hope and stories.

Richard Rohr, OFM A Lever and a Place to Stand, which has subsequently been published as Dancing To Stand Still.  This book of Rohr's is a compilation of his talks at the John Main Seminar of 2005. Have you read Aldous Huxley's Brave New World? Well it is in this. His discussion of the stages from law, prophecy to wisdom and other things besides make this an interesting read.

Paul Murray, OP Scars. Reflections on suffering and some very striking and poignant poems to deepen our reflection. Murray is a Dominican Friar who teaches Christian Spirituality at the Angelicum University in Rome. My brief thoughts on Scars.
